The point guard position has become so vital to contend in today’s NBA. Not only does this player have to facilitate the offense properly, he has to be capable of creating his own offense as well. This is something that is proving difficult for Dejounte Murray but may eventually be easier for third-string point guard Bryn Forbes to do. Of Course Murray has played more this season but Forbes clearly has an easier time scoring the basketball overall.
Bryn Forbes showed in the Summer League that he is capable of explosive offensive performances, especially from long distance. The Spurs have been struggling from three as of late, so giving more time to Forbes could work wonders. He help stop the Spurs four game slide by scoring a team-high 22 points versus the Hornets, while shooting a blazing 73% from the field.
Murray clearly has the advantage at the defensive end but the Spurs are in need of offense to weather the storm until their star players return. As a team their defense is very solid so sacrificing some defensive prowess at the PG position will likely not hurt the squad. Popovich seems to be mulling over this concept because he removed Murray from the starting five and inserted the more offensively effective Patty Mills. Forbes also played more minutes than Murray in the last contest.
