3) 61-21 Record:
- When a NBA team wins sixty plus games in a season it is a marvelous accomplishment but for the amazing San Antonio Spurs the record fell short of last year’s 67 game win total. The Spurs were coming off a season where they only lost one home game the entire year, this season they lost 10. Now this is nothing to be ashamed off at all but the facts are the facts. It would also been nice if the Spurs to capture home court throughout the playoffs but they were beaten by the Warriors yet again in this category.
2) Kawhi Leonard:
- Arguably the MVP of the league this year Leonard has been dazzling on BOTH ends of the court. He posted a career-high in points with about 26 ppg and he set a personal record for 30-point games in a season. He has truly been the top all-around player in the NBA, showing the tenacity to score and guard the opposing team’s best player. He has led the Spurs to the top of the defensive stats and will like garner a third consecutive DPOY award.
1) The Others:
- The Spurs will be defined by their playoff play but in the regular season they could never quite find that consistent second scorer. That player that night in and night out that would score 20 plus for this team if Leonard is double-teamed or having an off night. Lamarcus Aldridge has definitely had his moments but averaging 17 ppg is a bit under his potential and pay grade. Gasol has been a pleasant surprise for this team averaging 12 ppg and shooting well from three, but the Spurs are going to need a little more punch offensively than that if they want to return to championship glory.
Grade: A-
- Remember this grade is based on the Spurs themselves and the lofty standards they have. It is truly championship or bust mentality for this team and they have some things they can improve on. Leonard for one has to do so much heavy lifting on offense, who else is going to help the young star when it counts most? Parker? Gasol? Aldridge? This question has not been definitely answered in the regular season, despite this the team still won 60 plus games and that is a really good sign.
