3) Brutally Honest:
  • Comedian Dave Chapelle has been out of the major spotlight for sometime but he clearly showed that he has been keeping up with the news and its controversial topics. No topic was off limits or too controversial, ranging from the world’s dependency on technology and even gay marriage. He didn’t even hesitate to talk about the dismal lives of comedian Bill Cosby and the infamous OJ Simpson. This special is definitely for adults and requires some thick skin, but Chapelle is a master of walking this controversial line without completely crossing it.

2) Addressing HIS Controversy:
  • It is easy for Dave Chapelle to get away with teasing others about their dysfunctional lives because he takes time to share his own awkward moments. He is honest about his own controversy--including awkward run ins with fans (with banana peels) and even his widely publicized “drunken performance” in Detroit. So it isn’t just a comedy special it is insight on a comedian that has been rather reclusive for the large part of a decade. Audiences learned something about Chapelle in between the laughter, giving the special a little more substance.

1) Family Ties:
  • One of the funniest things about “Chapelle Show” over a decade ago was the family stories that he shared with audiences on screen. Stories that chronicled his son’s fascination with Nick Cannon and in this Netflix special he follows the same formula. He shares his thoughts on the married life and even talks about, his now youngest, son’s obsession with comedian Kevin Hart. It is hilarious seeing Chapelle voice playful feelings of envy about his fellow comedian. Jokes came across as authentic, family dysfunction that audiences can relate too.
